Despite a bout of food poisoning or something that threw all our Christmas plans into question the night before departure, we've now settled into our holiday setting of Ghent, Belgium. Elizabeth and David have a beautiful apartment in the center of town, it will be a true pleasure to visit here for the upcoming week and then some.
They've been kind enough to drive us around and show us the surroundings the last couple of days...
The fist stop yesterday was Westervleteren monestary, which fortunately had all its beer in stock in the store at the cafe. Here's a proud David with his catch: the Blonde and the 12, perhaps better known as "the best beer in the world".
And here's Hans enjoying a glass, while Bea enjoys her Sprite. Afterwards we drove to Bruges, which was rather wet, but ready for Christmas...
We enjoyed our first waffles...
Back in the apartment, Bea decorated the Christmas tree she brought from daycare with some ornaments she made that we laminated at the bike club.
...and then it was a drive through the pouring rain again in the opposite direction, to Wallonia. We found parking near the UCI World Cup cyclocross race at the Citadel in Namur, where it stopped raining for the hour of the race, leaving a pleasantly muddy course for the riders to suffer through and us to enjoy.
Kevin Pauwels won the race, and Sven Nys sneaked by a disappointed Niels Albert to finish second. A fully Belgian podium, appropriately enough!
